International operations - Precise detection worldwide

We are a voluntary organization of rescue dog teams specialized in locating missing persons in national and international missions. The SuchHundeStaffel Freiburg e.V. was founded in 1999. Our organization currently includes 11 certified teams of rescue dog handlers and rescue dogs with 2 further teams in training.

Our areas of expertise include

  • water detection,
  • shoreline detection, and
  • area searches

following natural disasters such as earthquakes, flooding, mudslides, landslides and more.

Our rescue dogs are trained to detect human bodies in water up to a depth of 40 metres.

Beside our rescue dogs, we utilize modern drone technology with a certified A2 remote pilot license. This enables us to conduct aerial surveys of search areas to enhance our operations when needed.

Thanks to our self-organization and extensive experience, we can respond flexibly and independently to international requirements. By providing precise GPS data, documented markers, and multiple verifications by different dogs, we ensure high reliability in locating missing persons.

Our close collaboration with authorities and organizations worldwide supports the successful execution of our missions.

Our Missions (a selection)

We are based in Germany but we also operate internationally. Our experience in international and national operations includes missions in Valencia (Spain), Ahrtal (Germany), and Budapest (Hungary).

Beside our expertise in water and shoreline detection, we are also highly experienced in searching areas following flood disasters in complex conditions with heavy debris, mud and driftwood.

In 2024, Valencia experienced torrential rain followed by disastrous flooding. We successfully completed 8 operational days based on our experience from our mission in the Ahrtal (Germany). Our 6 teams with 8 rescue dogs independently searched assigned areas and delivered precise location results both on land and on water.

The Ahrtal (Germany) experienced a similar natural catastrophe in 2021. The Ahr, a normally peaceful river, burst its banks following horrendous rain. More than 100 persons went missing in the subsequent flooding. We supported local emergency services in located missing persons with 4 teams on 2 missions.

We were called to Budapest in 2019 to support recovery efforts following a ship disaster on the Danube. The Hableánywith 28 people on board went down following a collision with another ship. We supported local authorities and the Hungarian military with 4 teams with 5 rescue dogs.

Our Areas of expertise

  1. Water Detection
Our dogs are trained to detect scent particles from missing persons underwater. Operating from boats, we can search up to 40 meters deep. Each detection point is marked with precise GPS coordinates and verified through multiple checks.

  2. Shoreline Detection
Our teams search shorelines and surrounding areas of water bodies for missing persons. Combining canine precision with technological tools like drone technology allows us to cover even hard-to-reach areas effectively.

  3. Area Searches After Flood Disasters
Following natural disasters such as floods, we assist in locating missing persons in complex environments with heavy debris, mud and driftwood. Our dogs are trained to perform reliably under challenging conditions.

Our Strenghts

  • Specialization in detection – we do not perform recovery operations

  • Reliable identification and dive points up to 40 meters deep in water

  • Precise GPS data and documented markers, including search areas Multiple verifications by different dogs for maximum reliability

  • Area searches after flood disasters in inaccessible environments

  • Access to a robust network of additional dogs and handlers for international missions
